Piano Man Steve's Blog

Open Arms (Journey)

Feb 10, 2025

Well, this song brings back some memories.  I was too little in 1982 to be aware of it when it was first released as a single...but it continued to get regular airplay for several years to come into the 1980s, and in case you didn't know...I was a radio junkie as a kid growing up at that time.  I used to listen to all 4 hours of "American Top 40" with Casey Kasem (and kept the habit for a few years after Shadoe Stevens took over) every Sunday afternoon into the early evening.

Steve Perry, Journey's lead vocalist at the time, was sort of the gold standard avatar of 80's singers, and Journey could deliver a power ballad like nobody else.  This was Journey's highest charting hit, and one of their most recognizable songs....but it missed the #1 slot, peaking at #2 and holding firm for 6 weeks.

I enjoy it because I love to open up my throat and go for big power notes with my voice....although I fully admit that I have to key it down a ways from Steve Perry.  Normally I have some philosophical thoughts that I want to share along with some song factoids, but this morning none are really hitting me.  I'm in an exceptionally good mood, so maybe I just feel like there's no need to preach at ya today!

I guess the closest I have is that the character in this tune feels a lot of passion for the person he's singing to....basically saying, "Telling you I love you isn't cutting it, and I don't have better words.  So come into my open arms and hopefully you'll feel what I wish I had the words to say."  Let's all endeavor to point ourselves at anything....a lover, a job, a pet, a hobby, a child....engage with whatever you feel this kind of passion about, and enjoy it to its fullest.  One day, we'll all be taking our last breath, and I promise you....it's the people and things you feel passionate about that you'll be thinking about....give yourselves all the memories you can with them.

Enjoy my cover of this song from a livestream show I did on July 5, 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and then check out one of my favorite performances of it by Journey themselves from back in their 80s heyday.

If you'd like to explore my piano method more deeply, my best students use my video courses and join me for conversation and twice monthly Q&A Livestreams in my private community...you can find it all HERE. Thanks.
