Sometimes When We Touch (Dan Hill) - Song Tutorial Masterclass
Feb 04, 2025I've always loved this song....it was played on soft rock / adult contemporary stations a lot when I was a kid. We had one of those in Ogallala, NE....it was called KOGA. My dad was a play by play broadcaster for football, volleyball, and basketball on that station, and cut lots of radio ads for his clothing store there, so it wasn't just a station we listened to a lot...it was a place I knew well and got to see the inside of quite a bit. So it was always a kick for me to listen to anything on KOGA because I knew what the room the DJ was sitting in looked like and all the equipment he or she was using.
Anyway, this song came on periodically and I always thought it was a beautiful melody with a very memorable lyrical hook. And I loved that the central instrument in the rhythm section was clearly piano. This method I teach doesn't require a song to even have piano in it for you to learn it and play it effectively, but it's always nice when it does. However....there's a little bit of a trap sometimes for some people when there's a prominent piano part in a song....it gets you to thinking that you need to COPY it note for note, which becomes a daunting and impossible task for most, and then they walk away.
In this Masterclass, we're going to go over a great rhythm pattern and some modifications that will produce the essence of the song beautifully without the ridiculous pressure to learn every single key that was pressed the day Dan Hill recorded it. Let's dive in!
Enjoy the masterclass of this song, and check out Dan Hill's beautiful master recording below.
