Happy Sunday Everyone!
Well, tomorrow is Elton John's 77th birthday. I'm a lover of many kinds of music, and an admirer of more artists and bands than I could list in a lifetime....but there are two that are so much more important to me than anyone else, and it's not even close....Billy Joel, and Elton John.
The truth is guys, when I think about what Elton's music has meant to me, and the spark it helped ignite in me over 30 years ago, and everything that has transpired between then and this moment writing this blog to alert my students around the world about content I've posted on YouTube that will be seen by many thousands more around the world....I get pretty emotional.
It's fun to get views, make money, and hear nice things said about you....but at the end of the day, that wouldn't be enough to keep me in this game. To this day, after more than three decades pursuing music, it's still the thrill of discovery that keeps me fresh in it. It's the new meaning a great lyric takes on as I grow older....it's the subtle nuance in some part buried in the mix that I suddenly notice for the first time....it's the passion and emotion in the singer's voice....it's the brilliantly conceived and executed piano signatures....and more than anything else, it's continuing to improve at making that music myself.
I love being able to connect with all of you and my audiences that I play for in person and online, but if you took all of that away and left me with nothing but a piano in my spare room....music would remain at the center of my life. And I can't think of anyone more responsible for making that so than Sir Elton John. This week's live stream show is an all Elton celebration. Thanks for listening to some of my thoughts....the words gratitude and appreciation feel like they fall short of what I feel for his music.
